Helping siblings to stay in the same foster home wherever possible

Sibling fostering, specifically refers to when brothers and sisters in the foster care system are able to be fostered together in the same household. The goal of sibling fostering is to help maintain the important bonds of family, while providing security, nurturing, support, and stability.

At Orchard Care Fostering, we have seen first-hand how beneficial it can be to place siblings together while in short-term or long-term foster care. We still ensure that each individual child has their specific needs considered, but we believe that placing siblings together in foster care can help to reduce the emotional impact of being removed from their home or biological family.

If you want to explore the possibility of sibling fostering and can help to care for more than one foster child, please reach out to our team in Durham. We are a not-for-profit organisation that is always seeking foster carers, and we are dedicated equal opportunities for all children, including those from larger families and with brothers and sisters.

Explore why sibling fostering is important and how you can help

  • Helps to preserve family bonds and provides additional stability during what is often a challenging and uncertain time.

  • Siblings can provide additional emotional support, comfort and a sense of familiarity.

  • Children being placed in foster care can struggle with identity and belonging and being placed with siblings can help prevent this.

  • Brothers and sisters often play a crucial role when it comes to both social development and emotional development and ensuring siblings are placed in a foster home together can help ensure this continues.
