Providing foster care
for the unique needs of a teenager
Teenagers in the foster care system can face challenges that younger children might not, and it is essential for us to find foster carers that can help these teenagers, in order to provide stability and build trust, and successful relationships.
Since our not-for-profit fostering agency was created in 2005, Orchard Care Fostering, have worked with foster carers to place teenagers and young people in safe, stable environments that allow them the space to explore their own identity and purpose. Many teenagers within the care system have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, and other difficult circumstances, and we aim to place them with foster carers that can provide a supportive and nurturing home environment that promotes healing and growth. We are dedicated to not only meeting the immediate needs of the teenagers in our care but also to empowering them with the tools and resources necessary for a successful transition into adulthood.
If you think that you could foster a teenager, then have a chat with our team in Durham. We are here to support you and can help you with the additional considerations that come with fostering a child with a disability.
How could fostering a teenager be different to fostering a younger child?
-
Teenagers have unique needs and going through adolescence can mean different developmental needs should be considered.
-
Relationships are key during the teenage years, and providing safety and stability is a must to ensure they have the freedom and guidance to explore their own identity, form good peer relationships and prepare for independence and becoming an adult.
-
Foster carers of teenagers play a crucial role when it comes to teaching life skills and practical skills, such as cooking and budgeting.
-
A unique approach should be adopted with teenagers that considers their history, culture and experiences, flexibility and adaptability will play a crucial role during foster care.
