You could be more eligible than you think
when it comes to becoming a foster carer

Becoming a foster carer means providing a home to a child, taking care of them and providing support and nurture. The main criteria for eligibility is:

  • That you must be aged 21 or over

  • That you have a spare bedroom or willingness to move

  • That you have the right to work in the UK

At Orchard Care Fostering, our main aim is to ensure that we can place children in a safe, stable environment and we aim to support foster carers from the very beginning of their journey to ensure they are equipped and supported when it comes to undertaking this vital role.

What steps are included within a foster carer assessment process?

An eligibility assessment with Orchard Care Fostering can take between 4 and 6 months. Our process is designed to not only protect the children in care, but also the foster carers too.

Some of the areas we check and assess are:

  • DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service in England) for foster carer applicants and all household members over the age of 18.

  • Local Authority check regarding your current living situation and where you have resided.

  • Health/Medical check to assess whether any health-related issues that could affect your ability to foster safely are present.

  • Work References and Personal References from employers, clients, friends and family.

Please do not assume that an issue within your history will automatically mean you cannot foster, it is best to discuss any concerns with our expert team as often worries can be alleviated. If you would like to discuss any of these checks or would like further information on next steps and applying, please get in touch with our team in Durham now. We’d love to hear from you.
