What is emergency fostering
and why is it needed?

Emergency foster care is the term given to care that is required urgently, most notably when a child needs to be removed from their home due to their safety being at risk. In these circumstances emergency foster care provides an immediate solution and is therefore typically organised at very short notice.

Emergency foster care is a critical part of the foster care system here in the UK, and at Orchard Care Fostering we are proud to work with foster carers in Durham and across the Northeast to enable them to provide immediate safety and care for children when they need it the most. Our not-for-profit policy allows us to maintain the high standards of care our service users expect, deserve, and require and we are proud to offer assistance, whenever it is needed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you are interested in becoming a foster carer and may be able to provide emergency foster care, please speak with our team in Durham. We are here to support you, so you can support any child that needs immediate foster care, during a time of crisis.

Key aspects of emergency fostering and how you can help

  • Offering an urgent short-term placement and safe haven that enables a child to be removed from an unsafe situation immediately.

  • Emergency foster placements are usually short term. They allow a child to be moved to a stable environment while social workers assess the situation and determine the next course of action, within the interests of the child.

  • Becoming an emergency foster carer means that you will need to be available around the clock to respond to urgent placement needs.

  • Emergency foster carers will receive training that enables them to provide emotional support and trauma-informed care.
