The difference between fostering and adoption

If you know that you want to provide a home and care for a child in the care system but want a deeper understanding of the difference between fostering and adoption, turn to Orchard Care Fostering, in Durham, for help.

Fostering vs Adoption

Often people may assume that fostering and adoption are similar, as they both involve giving a child a home, but there are many key differences between the two. If you are considering opening up your home to a child or young person, it is important for you to understand the different options and Orchard Care Fostering are here to help you do that.

The first thing to note is that there are many more children that need foster care in the Northeast, than are waiting for adoption. Foster care is an urgent need for care when a child needs to be removed from their home or separated from their biological parents. This could mean that the foster care is temporary, until the situation is rectified and the child in care can be reunited with their parents. Adoption is a permanent legal process and commitment, rather than temporary. At Orchard Care Fostering we were established in 2005 and have seen many successful foster placements that have been rewarding for both the foster carers and the children involved. We believe that fostering has a hugely positive impact, and we are here to support you all the way. If you think fostering could be an option for you, why not get in touch to find out more?

We are a not-for-profit organisation based in Durham, that is dedicated to equal opportunities for all children in foster care, including those who may only need temporary care and can be reunited with family in the future.

Some key differences between fostering and adoption

  • The primary purpose of fostering is to provide a temporary living arrangement for a child, whereas adoption is a permanent legal arrangement.

  • Becoming a foster carer means that you are able to work with a child or young person to help them maintain their family relationships and support work towards reunification.

  • Fostering enables you to help a child in care, in a way that works for you, particularly when permanent care, such as adoption, seems to daunting.

  • With fostering you have ongoing support, training, and help from the dedicated team at Orchard Care Fostering. We are here for you 24/7 and our goal is to care for you so you can care for the child you are looking after.
